Get your questions answered

Navigating the NDIS and understanding what support is available can be confusing. That’s why we’ve answered some of the most common (and trickiest) questions people ask when they’re getting started. If you can’t find what you’re looking for below, feel free to contact the Bonwall Disability Services team — we’re always here to help.

How do I apply for the NDIS if I’ve never used it before?

Applying for the NDIS starts with checking your eligibility. You must be under 65 years old, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent and significant disability. You can apply online, by calling the NDIS directly, or with the help of a support person or service like Bonwall Disability Services.

You’ll need to provide evidence of your disability—this includes medical reports, letters from health professionals, and information about how your condition affects your daily life. If needed, we can assist you with gathering the documents and submitting the Access Request. The process can take several weeks, so it’s good to start early and ask questions if you’re unsure.

Your needs might change due to your health, living situation, goals, or unexpected events—and that’s okay. If that happens, your current NDIS plan may no longer be suitable. You can request a plan reassessment through the NDIS.

You’ll need to explain what’s changed and why you need different or additional supports. We can help you document these changes and submit the request. In the meantime, we’ll adjust our support to meet your current needs as best we can while staying within your existing plan.

Yes, you can still access accommodation supports even if you currently live with family. The NDIS can fund Short-Term Accommodation (STA), Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA), or Supported Independent Living (SIL), depending on your goals and needs.

If living independently is something you’re working towards—or if your family needs a break—there are options available. We’ll help you explore these and find what best suits your lifestyle and comfort level.

Your NDIS plan will need to include the right funding categories, so we can also assist with planning ahead.

Understanding how to use your NDIS funding can be tricky, especially if you’re new to the system. Each funding category has rules around what it can and can’t be used for. If you’re plan-managed or working with a support coordinator, they can help guide you.

At Bonwall Disability Services, we make sure you know exactly how your budget works, what your plan allows, and how to get the most out of your funding without risking overuse or non-compliance. If needed, we can connect you with experienced support coordinators or plan managers.

You have full choice and control over your NDIS providers. If you’re not happy with your current support, you can switch to a new provider at any time—there’s no need to stay locked in.

tart by checking your service agreement for notice periods. Then, you can notify your provider and begin working with a new one. At Bonwall Disability Services, we make the transition smooth and respectful.

We’ll guide you through ending existing services, set up a new service agreement, and ensure there are no gaps in your care.

We take time to understand who you are—not just your support needs, but your personality, communication style, routines, and preferences. Based on this, we recommend a few staff members who we think would be a good fit.

You can meet them and decide who you feel comfortable with. If the fit isn’t quite right, we’ll try again—no questions asked. Our goal is to create positive, lasting relationships with support workers who genuinely make your day easier.
